We are looking for a Loan Officer to join a well-established credit union in the Kearny Mesa.

  • You are accountable to approve, deny, or make counter offers on loan requests while prioritizing queue volume to ensure timely responses
  • In addition you will work closely with branch staff, dealers, and affinity partners, and has frequent contact with applicants and members
  • Review incoming applications, pay stubs, and tax returns from applicants
  • Thoroughly analyze received information to make sound decisions on behalf of the credit union
  • Answers department line to assist internal staff, applicants, members, and affinity partners with questions
  • Pro-actively monitors incoming queue volume from all application channels and prioritizes workload to ensure timely decisions
  • Provide guidance and training to other loan officers and branch staff
  • Reviews and decisions approximately 35-50 loans daily
    Answers approximately 20 emails from branches and affinity partners daily
    Receives approximately 20 calls from branches, dealers, affinity partners, and applicants daily
    Makes approximately 5-10 calls to branches, dealers, affinity partners, and applicants daily
    Lending Authority: Secured and unsecured limits as approved per loan policy guidelines
  • Provides routine information concerning credit union services and policies, loan eligibility, and lending criteria to branch staff, dealers, affinity partners, and applicants
  • Reviews all incoming loan applications to determine loan eligibility, evaluates income, other loan commitments, debt ratio, payment ratio, credit rating, and length of employment, to ensure that loan requests are evaluated appropriately and within established policies and procedures
  • Interacts daily with branch staff, dealers, affinity partners, and applicants to provide direction and obtain information and clarification
  • Reviews tax returns, paystubs, and bank statements to properly verify income
  • With minimal supervision, pro-actively monitors incoming queue volume from all application channels and prioritizes workload to ensure timely decisions
  • Utilizes a thorough knowledge of loan policy to communicate credit granting criteria, interest rates, interest rate computation, advance requirements, and disclosure and the documentation required
  • Reviews more complex requests and/or applications where the applicant is marginally qualified or requirements exceed established loan underwriting limits or loan policy
  • Makes recommendations for alternative loan types or counter-offers where applicable
  • While lending management is unavailable, such as management meetings or Saturday shifts, the Sr. Loan Officer shall work independently to resolve member issues and assist the branches with more difficult application scenarios
  • Supports the strategic direction for loan growth; reviews application data and credit report trades to cross-sell additional loan products
  • Develops a working knowledge of the credit union's various processing systems
  • Assists with projects assigned to the lending area, as needed
  • Follows the competition and remains aware of industry trends to make recommendations for expanded underwriting guidelines
  • Provides guidance and training to other loan officers and branch staff
  • Performs necessary steps to ensure BSA/AML compliance to reduce risk to the credit union
  • Performs other duties as required
  • The experience as acquired from a high school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of 2-5 years of experience underwriting residential / home loans
  • Must demonstrate judgment and possess the analytical skills necessary to decision loan applications and evaluate collateral quality
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of underwriting lending policies and procedures and the ability to review and analyze credit reports
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritizes workflow, meet deadlines, and resolve conflicts with tact and diplomacy
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Ability to appear for work on time, follow directions from a supervisor, interact effectively with co-workers, understand and follow posted work rules and procedures, and accept coaching
  • Ability to operate business machines such as computer, printer, fax, copier and telephonic devices
  • Supervisory experience a plus
  • Bilingual- Spanish speaking a plus
