Job Description

The position of Accountant 1 performs a variety of general accounting support tasks within the Accounting Department.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  1. Personally, provides exceptional member service; uses Service Standards in every work-related interaction.
  2. Actively participates in meeting the goals of the department and the Credit Union.
  3. Provides excellent service by using a positive and professional tone to assists callers and Team Members accurately, thoroughly and as efficiently as possible while maintaining consistent and friendly service. Ensures that a smile can be heard on each call.
  4. Uses organizational tools and techniques to complete tasks on time and successfully manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously, with the ability to give unexpected status in any of the areas of responsibility.
  5. Receives/distributes incoming/outgoing mail.
  6. Responsible for straightforward accounts payable processes such as filing, scanning, date stamping, data entry, and mailing of payments.
  7. Provides daily and/or monthly reports as requested to designated recipients by designated deadlines.
  8. Processes received checks.
  9. Reviews General Ledger (GL) variances daily to ensure there are no discrepancies.
  10. Maintains historical records by scanning (imaging) documents.
  11. Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential.
  12. Reconciles simple to intermediate GL accounts; identifies and corrects unreconciled items.
  13. Assists department with the month-end closing process and month-end closing entries.
  14. Assists as needed during regulatory examinations and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) audits.
  15. Ensures all work is presented in an accurate, detailed, consistent and professional manner.
  16. Maintains a working knowledge of Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)/Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC) applicable to area of responsibility and complies with all laws/regulations.
  17. Participates and completes designated monthly training sessions set forth by department and/or organization.
  18. Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
  19. Other duties assigned by supervisor as necessary to achieve the goals of the Credit Union and the department.

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position

Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals, policies and memorandums; ability to write routine correspondence and communicate effectively and tactfully, orally and in writing with Team Members and Members, vendors and management; must possess the ability to speak clearly so others can understand; basic math, and problem-solving skills; basic typing and data entry skills, effective interpersonal, ability to express ideas orally and effectively and speak clearly in individual or group situations; ability to use correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; produces written information which may include technical material that is appropriate for intended audience; intermediate skills operating personal computer including Microsoft Office Suites of Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and navigating the internet. Ability to perform accurate data input into a variety of software programs; prior experience with our core accounting system, prior experience to core accounting system of Symitar is preferred; working knowledge of General Accounting Accepted Principle (GAAP) and Client Bank (FRB) using website typing, and 10-key. S trong knowledge of Excel and pivot tables is required.

computation; ability to plan and complete assignments with deadlines. Possess a basic understanding of the following: structure of the credit union's balance sheet and income statements; asset-liability management.

Ability to make sound business decision on complex issues; knowledge of Federal Regulations and compliance; ability to provide courteous, knowledgeable and professional member service both in person and on the telephone. Education and Experience : High school diploma or its equivalent is required and a minimum one (1) to two (2) years of accounting experience preferably in the financial industry (bank or credit union). A Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field is strongly preferred, may be substituted for practical work experience.

Compliance : Ability to maintain a proficient knowledge of and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations under BSA/AML and OFAC regulations. This includes, but is not limited to: Bank Secrecy Act; SAFE Act; Anti Money Laundering; Regulation CC; and Regulation Z.

Language Skills : Ability to communicate and understand written and oral language, and the ability to effectively present information.

Mathematical Skills : Ability to perform basic math skills to include adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability : Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Other Skills and Abilities : Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills; organization and prioritizing skills; attention to detail and accuracy; intermediate computer skills to include word processing and spreadsheets; working knowledge of current core and accounting systems; data entry, typing, and 10-key; accounting and general ledger skills. Must have the ability to be bonded, and the ability to be punctual and have regular attendance. Assignments are required to be proofread for accuracy, and in the appropriate format, font, font style and size prior to submission.
